The implosion of the Weirton Steel Basic Oxygen Plant caused damage to people and their properties. Many are still dealing with the aftereffects to this day.
“Recently, the court found that three of the defendants — Frontier Industrial Corp., Mingo Junction Steel Works, LLC., and SCM Engineered Demolition & Explosives Inc. — were legally responsible for any damages to these residents caused by the use of explosives during the implosion. A case management order has directed that a series of ‘bellwether’ trials (or test cases) will be scheduled in small groups to determine the amount of compensation due these residents for property damage and injuries regarding their health, and eventually, to determine if long-term medical monitoring is necessary.”
